The Late Seamus Heaney R.I.P.
Yeats Society Sligo, and the Yeats International Summer School in particular, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Seamus for his contribution to the school extending over 40 years.
In listening to tributes in the media the terms ‘genius’, ‘greatness’, ‘a true poet’ have been uttered by many national figures, and the Society easily identifies with all of these words. But most of all we in Sligo who had the great honour to meet with him and his wife Marie on his many visits to Sligo, remember the man, his humanity, his humility, his ability to meet and relate to people and that greatest of all skills – his ability to identify himself with individuals, lecturers, poets and most of all students, and empower them to pursue their dreams and live their lives to the full.
