Yeats Winter School Programme 2019


Yeats Winter School runs from January 25th to 27th and is hosted by Sligo Park Hotel.

Director PJ. Matthews and guest writer Frank McGuinness facilitate a weekend of reading, exploring and thinking about Yeats’s poetry and his brother’s work, the Yeats family and the places in Sligo that inspired them.




Frank McGuinness is Professor of Creative Writing in University College Dublin. A world-renowned playwright, his first great stage hit was the highly acclaimed Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme. Other plays include Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, The Hanging Gardens, Gates Of Gold and most recently, Donegal. He is also a highly skilled adapter of plays by writers such as Ibsen (Tony Award Best Revival, A Doll's House), Sophocles, Brecht, and writer of several film scripts, including Dancing at Lughnasa. He has published several collections of poetry and two novels. His most recent book of short stories, Paprika, has just been published by Brandon Press.


P.J. Mathews completed his doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin and joined University College Dublin, School of English, Drama and Film Associate Professor in 2004. Prior to that he lectured at St Patrick's College, Dublin City University (2001-2004) and Trinity College Dublin (1999-2001). He is currently a member of the Governing Board of RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster.
