The Hyde Bridge Open

Yeats, Poetry and Place

The Hyde Bridge Gallery celebrates the 150th birthday of WB Yeats

The literature of W.B. Yeats, Ireland’s most feted poet, continues to inspire and influence a world- wide readership while artists have always found a rich vein to be mined in the breadth and beauty of his work.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats (1865-1948) the Hyde Bridge gallery (formerly the Sligo Art Gallery) is giving its annual small works exhibition a Yeats focus. An Open Call exhibition was first announced in December. Now, in response to the considerable interest in the project, the Hyde Bridge is extending and revising the call for submissions to the exhibition which is scheduled to take place in late May ( May 28th to June 10th).

Artists are asked to respond to any aspect of Yeats’ writing ( his poems, prose, plays or letters may function as the starting point for artists’ submissions) while Sligo places, made famous by so many of the best loved poem (Hazelwood, Glencar, Ben Bulben, Knocnarea and so forth are all ‘characters’ in the early poems) may also inspire the subject or content of artists work.

In keeping with the spirit of the project it is hoped that artists will make new work prompted by visiting or revisiting the extraordinary oeuvre of this literary giant.

This is a small works exhibition. In keeping with the 150th birthday theme of the show we will be accepting work of a qualitative standard, ideally, square in size and measuring up to but no greater than 150 cm x 150 cm. All media will be considered and three dimensional and photographic work are welcome.

Artwork that exceeds these dimensions will not be accepted. If work is framed, the size of the frame must also be accommodated within the 150 x 150 size restriction.
